About this Water

The Río Baker is Chile's largest river by flow volume, draining Lago General Carrera — the second largest lake in South America — through a spectacular canyon system in the Aysén Region. Its glacier-fed turquoise water and dramatic Andean terrain make it one of Patagonia's most visually stunning fisheries. Large brown and rainbow trout inhabit both the powerful main stem and the calmer tributary streams that join along the Carretera Austral highway.

The Río Baker carries a distinctive turquoise color from Lago General Carrera's glacial flour — fishing in this vivid blue water against the backdrop of the Andes is one of the most visually spectacular freshwater experiences available.

Recommended Flies — Brown/Rainbow Trout (Salmo trutta / Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Chile's Río Baker is the country's most voluminous river, flowing from the northern Patagonian ice fields. The incredible turquoise waters and wild brown and rainbow trout in the Cochrane area make this one of South America's most scenic and productive fisheries. Fish average 3–6 lbs with trophy browns possible.

Productive Patterns

Technique

The Baker Valley near Cochrane offers the best access. A drift boat allows coverage of the most water. The Baker's wild fish respond to standard Patagonian approaches — large attractors and streamers.

Seasonal Notes

Southern Hemisphere summer season. The Baker's cold, clear flows from lake sources maintain excellent temperatures year-round. Standard nymph patterns through the runs before surface activity. Evening spinner falls on the calmer sections of the Baker valley.

January Outlook

January is outstanding on the Baker system. The largest individual fish of the season are taken in January when hoppers and large attractor dries are most effective. The Carretera Austral provides road access to various sections.

Productive Patterns

  • Grasshopper Fly
  • Cicada Pattern
  • Large Stimulator
  • Sculpin Streamer

Tips

January hopper fishing on the Baker's tributary streams is exceptional. The main river requires stout gear for the powerful currents. Focus on the deep seams and ledge drops.

Water Notes

Water 54-62°F. Peak summer. The glacier-fed Baker stays cold throughout summer — ideal for large trout.

November Outlook

November opens the Baker season. This massive Andean river drains Lago General Carrera (the second largest lake in South America) and is the most powerful river in Chile. Large brown and rainbow trout in the main river and tributaries.

Productive Patterns

  • Large Streamer
  • Patagonian Caddis
  • Royal Wulff (large)
  • Articulated Sculpin

Tips

The Baker requires heavier gear than most Chilean rivers — 6-7 weight rods for the fast main current. Large streamers worked through the deep pools produce the biggest fish. Tributaries offer calmer water for dry fly fishing.

Water Notes

Water 44-52°F. Spring flows. The Baker can run high from glacial melt — check conditions. Clear sections alternate with turquoise glacial water.

December Outlook

December brings prime conditions on the Baker and its tributaries. The clarity of Patagonian winter water from Lago General Carrera makes the Baker brilliantly transparent. Large brown trout sight fishing is exceptional.

Productive Patterns

  • Large Caddis Dry
  • Stimulator
  • Streamer (large)
  • Dry Dropper Rig

Tips

The Baker's tributaries — Cochrane, Neff, Ventisquero — offer more approachable water than the mighty main stem. These smaller rivers have excellent dry fly fishing.

Water Notes

Water 50-58°F. Early summer conditions. Glacial turquoise color in main stem. Tributaries run clear.

Access & Approach

Cochrane is the main access town, reached via the Carretera Austral from Coyhaique. The highway provides access to multiple river sections. Chilean fishing licence required. The Baker's powerful current requires wading caution — cleated wading boots essential. Several lodges and outfitters operate from Cochrane.
