Weekly AI Outlook as of 06/05/26

The Boardman is running high at 1,180 cfs with water temps hitting 62°F — ideal conditions are building for the signature Hex hatch in the slower silty sections below Scheck's. No recent shop intel — outlook based on current conditions. With evening temps staying warm through the weekend, look for the giant mayflies to start moving in earnest. Focus on the deeper pools and back eddies after sunset, and keep that headlamp dark until you absolutely need it.

About this Water

The Boardman River in northern Michigan runs through the Grand Traverse area before emptying into Grand Traverse Bay. The river holds wild brown trout, brook trout, and a strong steelhead and brown trout run from the bay in fall and spring. The Mayfield Pond Park area and the upper Boardman through the dam removals offer the most productive trout water. Hatches center on Hendrickson, Sulphur, and the local Hex emergence in early summer.

The Boardman River was the site of one of the largest dam-removal projects in the Midwest — three dams removed between 2012 and 2018 — restoring 160 miles of historic trout and salmon habitat.

January Outlook

January on the Boardman River near Traverse City. The spring-fed freestone stream runs clear and cold through the Kalkaska County forest. The season is closed but the Scheck's Place area is accessible for exploratory walks along one of Michigan's most restored trout streams.

Productive Patterns

  • Planning season

Tips

January on the Boardman is a planning month. The dam removal project (2012-2019) dramatically improved the lower river — plan to explore both the upper Scheck's Place area and the lower Traverse City urban reach in the coming season.

Water Notes

20–150 cfs. Water 38–44°F. Michigan winter. Spring-fed character moderates temperature swings.

February Outlook

February on the Boardman. The spring-fed character keeps a small amount of winter flow available. The Traverse City dam-removal reach through downtown is a unique winter wildlife destination even outside the fishing season.

Productive Patterns

  • Planning season
  • Midge Nymph (very mild days only)

Tips

Plan the Boardman's exceptional May and June hatch season — Hendrickson, Sulphur, and the Hex are the events to target. The Northern Angler in Traverse City is the definitive local resource.

Water Notes

20–130 cfs. Water 38–44°F. Winter. Spring-fed consistency a Boardman trademark.

March Outlook

March brings the Boardman to life. First BWO and midge hatches signal the spring transition. Snowmelt flows increase the river. The season opener in late April begins to feel close.

Productive Patterns

  • Midge #22-24
  • Blue Winged Olive (late March)
  • Pheasant Tail
  • Soft Hackle

Tips

March on the Boardman is transitional — first hatch activity begins on warm afternoons. Fish the Scheck's Place area where access is excellent. The dam-removal lower reach through Traverse City is also showing spring signs.

Water Notes

40–300 cfs. Water 38–48°F. Spring approaching. Snowmelt increases flows. First hatches beginning late month.

April Outlook

April is the Boardman's opening month. Hendrickson hatches begin in mid-to-late April — one of the finest spring hatches on any Michigan river. Wild brown trout at Scheck's Place rise eagerly after winter.

Productive Patterns

  • Hendrickson #12-14
  • Blue Quill #18
  • Little Black Caddis
  • Soft Hackle

Tips

The Hendrickson hatch on the Boardman near Scheck's Place is outstanding — wild brown trout rising in beautiful river corridor. 1-4pm is the prime emergence window on warm afternoons. The lower dam-removal reach also shows fish in spring.

Water Notes

40–200 cfs. Water 44–52°F. Season opening. Prime Hendrickson conditions mid-to-late April.

May Outlook

May is the Boardman's finest spring month. March Brown, Sulphur, and Caddis hatches overlap to produce some of the finest dry fly fishing in Michigan. Both the upper Scheck's Place water and the lower dam-removal reach are excellent.

Productive Patterns

  • March Brown #10-12
  • Elk Hair Caddis #14
  • Sulphur #16
  • Hendrickson (early month)

Tips

May on the Boardman is exceptional — multiple hatches and wild brown trout in prime condition. Fish the Scheck's Place area in the upper trout water. Evening caddis fishing is outstanding. The lower dam-removal reach through Traverse City has developed excellent fishing.

Water Notes

35–180 cfs. Water 48–56°F. Outstanding spring conditions. Multiple simultaneous hatches.

June Outlook

June brings the Boardman's most dramatic event: the Hex hatch. Late June evenings in the slower silty sections produce large wild brown trout rising to the giant mayfly. This is Michigan fly fishing's signature moment.

Productive Patterns

  • Hex Dry #4-6
  • Brown Drake #10 (early June)
  • Sulphur (early month)
  • Elk Hair Caddis

Tips

The Hex hatch on the Boardman occurs in the slower silty sections downstream from Scheck's Place. The hatch is lighter than on the Au Sable or Pere Marquette but produces excellent fishing. Fish after dark with a headlamp kept off. The biggest browns in the river come up on Hex nights.

Water Notes

25–140 cfs. Water 52–60°F. Hex season in late June. Fish evening to midnight.

July Outlook

July terrestrials on the Boardman. Hoppers and beetles along the cedar-banked upper river. Trico spinner falls at dawn in the slower sections. The Traverse City dam-removal reach provides urban summer fishing.

Productive Patterns

  • Hopper-Dropper

  • Trico Spinner #22-24 (dawn)
  • Elk Hair Caddis (evening)

Tips

July on the Boardman is excellent for terrestrial fishing in the Scheck's Place area. Dawn Trico spinner falls on the slower sections can be exceptional. The lower Traverse City reach provides accessible urban summer fishing — visible fish in clear water.

Water Notes

20–110 cfs. Water 54–62°F. Summer conditions. Clear visibility. Terrestrial season.

August Outlook

August terrestrial fishing on the Boardman. The lower dam-removal reach through Traverse City is a remarkable urban fishery — large visible fish in crystal clear water near downtown. The upper Scheck's Place water fishes best in the morning and evening.

Productive Patterns

  • Hopper
  • Beetle
  • Flying Ant #18
  • Evening Caddis

Tips

August on the Boardman is excellent in the Traverse City urban section — visible fish in clear water below the dam removal sites. A unique experience to sight-fish for 18-inch wild browns in a city park setting. The upper water fishes best early morning.

Water Notes

15–90 cfs. Water 56–64°F. Summer low water. Urban section of the lower Boardman is productive and unique.

September Outlook

September is excellent on the Boardman. BWO hatches return and pre-spawn brown trout become increasingly aggressive. The upper Scheck's Place water and the lower urban reach both fish well. Michigan fall colors begin.

Productive Patterns

  • Blue Winged Olive #18-20
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Streamer
  • Soft Hackle

Tips

September on the Boardman is outstanding — pre-spawn brown trout are aggressive and reliable BWO hatches provide dry fly action. Fish the pool tails in the Scheck's Place area. Streamer fishing in the deeper bends for large pre-spawn fish.

Water Notes

30–130 cfs. Water 50–58°F. Outstanding fall conditions. Pre-spawn brown trout aggressive.

October Outlook

October is the Boardman's finest fall month. Spawning brown trout in brilliant color. The northern Michigan hardwoods are spectacular. The dam-removal lower reach through Traverse City is particularly scenic.
