Weekly AI Outlook as of 06/05/26

Bulkley's running high at 16,174 cfs — classic early June freshet conditions that push steelhead into softer water along banks and tributaries. Clear, cool weather ahead should stabilize flows and improve clarity by weekend. Focus on slow presentations with heavily weighted flies in the cushions behind boulders and current seams where fish can hold without fighting the main flow. No recent shop intel — outlook based on current conditions and seasonal patterns.

About this Water

The Bulkley River is BC's most accessible prime steelhead river — the town of Smithers sits directly on the river, and public access is abundant throughout the system. Unlike the remote canyon fisheries of the Babine and Kispiox, the Bulkley offers the rare combination of world-class wild steelhead fishing with genuine public access. The river has a strong community of guides and outfitters who know the system intimately and can put visiting anglers on fish quickly.

The Bulkley is one of the only world-class steelhead rivers where a visiting angler can show up, purchase a licence at the local fly shop, and walk directly to the river for a genuine shot at wild fish — no lodge booking or helicopter required.

Fall Run

The Bulkley River is the heart of British Columbia's 'Skeena Country' steelhead experience and the birthplace of the skated dry fly technique for steelhead. Wild Bulkley steelhead will rise aggressively to a properly skated dry fly on the surface — one of the most exciting takes in fly fishing. Fish average 10–14 lbs.

Productive Patterns

Technique

The Bulkley is best known for skated dry fly fishing. A Waller Waker or large deer-hair dry fly skated across the current at the right speed and angle can bring a 12-lb steelhead to the surface in an explosive boil. Traditional wet fly swinging also produces. Guides in Smithers understand the river intimately.

Seasonal Notes

Wild steelhead enter the Bulkley from the Skeena from August through November. September and October fish are in prime condition. Nymphing in high or cold water conditions.

Access & Approach

Smithers, BC (YYD). Public access along Highway 16 and numerous road ends throughout the system. Walk-and-wade fishing with guides or independently. BC Sport Fishing licence + steelhead licence required. All wild fish must be released.
