Target species: Brown and Rainbow.

About this Water

New Zealand's Clutha River — the largest river by volume in the country — flows from Lake Wanaka through the Otago high country to the Pacific. Its tributary network in the Mackenzie Basin and central Otago produces some of the finest sight fishing for large wild brown trout anywhere on earth. Fish averaging 4–6 lbs in crystal clear, low-gradient braided channels demand stalking skills more akin to hunting than conventional fishing.

The Clutha system's clear backcountry tributaries are so transparent that anglers routinely sight fish to individual brown trout at 30 meters — technical stalking with precise casting is the only way to succeed.

January Outlook

January is prime summer season in the Clutha system. Large brown trout sight-fishing with cicadas, attractor dries, and nymphs. This is arguably the finest dry fly fishing experience in the world.

Productive Patterns

  • Cicada
  • Royal Wulff
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Tungsten Hare & Copper

Tips

Sight fishing to specific large brown trout is the NZ method. Crawl to the bank and observe before casting. These fish are extremely wary — one bad cast ends the opportunity.

Water Notes

Water 56-64°F. Long NZ summer days. Crystal-clear water. Fish are in known lies.

February Outlook

February continues the summer pattern with excellent cicada and dry fly fishing. The upper Clutha tributaries hold large wild brown trout in spectacular backcountry. Helicopter access opens remote water.

Productive Patterns

  • Cicada
  • Stimulator
  • Royal Wulff (large)
  • Nymph (deep Tungsten)

Tips

February backcountry NZ fishing is legendary. Helicopter trips to remote wilderness rivers for 4-8 lb brown trout seeing few anglers. Book well in advance.

Water Notes

Water 58-65°F. Summer low flows developing. Clear and beautiful.

March Outlook

March (NZ late summer/early autumn) brings excellent autumn conditions. Fish are feeding actively before winter. Cicada season fades but mayfly and caddis hatches increase.

Productive Patterns

  • Elk Hair Caddis #12-14
  • Parachute Adams
  • Humpy
  • Nymph Dropper

Tips

March offers the best combination of dry fly fishing without summer crowds. Water is low and clear. Fish are feeding intensively before the season closes.

Water Notes

Water 56-62°F. Excellent late summer conditions. Very clear water.

April Outlook

April is the final month of the South Island season (closes April 30). Autumn conditions produce excellent hatches and feeding fish. Some of the largest fish of the year are caught in April.

Productive Patterns

  • Caddis Dry
  • Mayfly Parachute
  • Stimulator
  • Large Nymph

Tips

The final weeks of the season bring fish feeding aggressively before winter. Autumn is often the best time for the very largest Clutha brown trout.

Water Notes

Water 50-56°F. Autumn cooling. Season closes April 30. Last chance until November.

May Outlook

May is the closed season on the South Island, New Zealand. The Clutha River and all South Island streams close April 30 and remain closed through October. NZ winter means planning season for next November's opening. Research tributaries, book guides, and plan your South Island itinerary.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed season — South Island NZ April 30–October 31
  • Plan itinerary for November opening
  • Tie Cicada, Royal Wulff, and Hare & Copper patterns

Tips

The South Island closed season protects spawning brown and rainbow trout. Use this time to research the upper Clutha tributaries, the Matukituki, and the Greenstone rivers. Book helicopter access and guided trips well in advance — the best NZ guides book a year ahead.

Water Notes

CLOSED SEASON. South Island NZ waters closed April 30. Season reopens October 1 (general opening) or November 1 on some waters. Check Fish & Game regulations.

June Outlook

June is mid-winter in South Island New Zealand. The Clutha system is closed for the season. NZ winter fishing is limited to North Island (Tongariro) or designated rivers. South Island planning continues.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed season — South Island NZ
  • Consider North Island (Tongariro) for June fishing
  • Plan next season's backcountry trips

Tips

If you're in NZ in June, consider the Tongariro River on the North Island — it's in prime season with large lake-run rainbows. South Island rivers remain closed until October or November. Research backcountry helicopter access to remote South Island tributaries for next season.

Water Notes

CLOSED SEASON. South Island NZ. Season closed. Consider Tongariro River (North Island) for June fishing.

July Outlook

July is the heart of South Island winter. The Clutha and all South Island rivers remain closed. North Island rivers (Tongariro, Whanganui) are in peak season. Plan South Island summer trips for December–March.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed season — South Island NZ
  • Tongariro River (North Island) at peak season in July

Tips

July is peak season on the Tongariro River (North Island) with the main winter run of large lake-run rainbows. If visiting NZ in July, fly to the North Island for Tongariro fishing. The Clutha remains closed.

Water Notes

CLOSED SEASON. South Island NZ. Clutha system closed. Tongariro (North Island) at peak season in July.

August Outlook

August — still the South Island closed season. The Clutha River remains closed as NZ winter continues. The North Island Tongariro is still in peak salmon/rainbow season. South Island rivers reopen for season in October or November depending on region.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed season — South Island NZ
  • Tongariro River (North Island) still in season

Tips

August is the last full month of the South Island closed season. Start finalizing plans for the November South Island opening. Book guides, accommodation near Wanaka or Queenstown, and helicopter access for remote streams. The best NZ guides for Clutha tributaries book 6–12 months ahead.

Water Notes

CLOSED SEASON. South Island NZ. Season reopens October 1–November 1 depending on water. Check current Fish & Game NZ regulations.

September Outlook

September is the final month of the South Island closed season. The Clutha River reopens in October or November. Early season preparation: licenses, guides, and gear checking. Some South Island rivers reopen October 1 — research which sections open first.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed season ending — some waters reopen October 1
  • Purchase NZ fishing license
  • Tie season opening patterns: Royal Wulff, Cicada, Hare & Copper

Tips

Water Notes

CLOSED SEASON ending. South Island NZ. Some waters reopen October 1. Check Fish & Game South Otago regulations for specific openings.

October Outlook

October — South Island fishing reopens! October 1 marks the opening of many South Island rivers including portions of the Clutha system. Early season fish are naive and hungry after 5 months without pressure. The best early-season window before Christmas crowds arrive.

Productive Patterns

  • Royal Wulff #12
  • Parachute Adams
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Hare & Copper Nymph

Tips

Opening weekend on South Island NZ is legendary — fish that haven't seen a fly for months are catchable in clear water. The Clutha system opens progressively through October. Fish the lower accessible sections first. NZ guides are available from opening day — book in advance.

Tips

Early season NZ fishing is excellent for large, naive fish. The Clutha system is vast — hire a guide for the upper sections. Large cicadas begin appearing in November.
