About this Water
- Coastal Flats
- Best months: Feb–April, Sept–Oct
The Rio Colorado in northeastern Costa Rica drains into the Caribbean Sea near the Nicaraguan border, creating a labyrinthine estuary system famous for fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) and large Atlantic tarpon. This remote jungle river is the classic Caribbean coast tarpon fishery — fishing from small pangas through mangrove-lined channels under a canopy of rainforest, with the sounds of howler monkeys and macaws providing the soundtrack. The Tortuguero area also serves as critical nesting habitat for sea turtles.
Fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) is the world's heaviest-bodied snook species — distinguished from the more common common snook by its barrel-shaped proportions, it is the most powerful snook per pound and the definitive Caribbean coast fly rod target.
