Target species: Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon.

About this Water

Guanaja is the least-developed of Honduras's Bay Islands, a mountainous Caribbean island surrounded by pristine coral reef and extensive turtle grass flats that hold permit, bonefish, and snapper. The island's underdeveloped status means flats fishing here receives only a fraction of the pressure found at more famous destinations — fish are less educated and often more willing than at heavily-pressured Caribbean fisheries. The Bay Islands' reef system is among the finest in the western Caribbean.

Guanaja's permit flats have been fished seriously for fly only in recent years — fish that have been exposed to very few fly presentations respond with the kind of enthusiastic aggression only seen at the most remote and pristine destinations.

January Outlook

January prime season on the Guanaja flats. Clear Caribbean winter water and active permit. The island's topography creates protected leeward flats even in trade wind conditions.

Productive Patterns

  • Permit Crab (small)
  • Gotcha
  • Mantis Shrimp
  • Spawning Shrimp (bonefish)

Tips

January's northeast trades keep temperatures comfortable. The leeward flats on Guanaja's western side provide sheltered fishing. Snapper and jack provide additional species on heavier flies.

Water Notes

Water 74-80°F. Peak Caribbean dry season. Excellent permit flat conditions. Light trade winds.

February Outlook

February at Guanaja is prime flats season. Bonefish are feeding aggressively and permit are on the outer grass flats. The Bay Islands' Caribbean setting combines world-class flat fishing with one of the Caribbean's finest diving destinations. The island's small lodge scene provides personalized guiding.

Productive Patterns

  • Del Brown Permit Crab (#2-4)
  • Merkin Crab
  • Gotcha (bonefish)
  • Spawning Shrimp

Tips

February's northeast trade winds provide crystal visibility on the turtle grass flats. The larger permit (10-20 lbs) cruise the outer flat edges. Bonefish average 4-8 lbs. The small lodge scene here is friendly and the guiding is highly personalized.

Water Notes

Water 72-78°F. Clear and calm between trade wind puffs. Excellent permit and bonefish conditions. Dry season at peak.

March Outlook

Confirm lodge availability for summer months at Guanaja. Trip insurance is important June-November. The fish are there year-round — only the weather and logistics make summer less popular. Early mornings are best in summer heat.

Productive Patterns

  • Planning season — dry season opens late November
  • Gotcha (if operation available)
  • Spawning Shrimp
  • Confirm lodge status before booking summer

Tips

August is the least advisable month for planned fishing trips to Guanaja. Hurricane risk is real, lodge operations are minimal, and weather is unpredictable. Plan your Guanaja trip for December-April for the best experience.

Water Notes

Water 83-87°F. Peak hurricane season. Very limited lodge operations. Year-round fish present but logistics extremely challenging.

September Outlook

September at Guanaja — hurricane season continues. The Caribbean Bay Islands are still in their wet season but conditions are slowly improving. Late September can produce good fishing on the flats as water temperatures begin dropping and fish become more active.

Productive Patterns

  • Planning season — book December-April trip
  • Spawning Shrimp (if conditions allow)
  • Gotcha
  • Merkin Crab

Tips

September improvement depends on hurricane activity. Some years are relatively calm; others see significant tropical weather. Late September Guanaja fishing can be exceptional when conditions cooperate. Monitor forecasts and have flexible arrangements.
