About this Water
- Freestone
- Best months: March–Nov; peak May–June (spring) and Sept–Oct (autumn)
Scotland's famous Highland salmon rivers — the Spey, Tay, Dee, and Tweed — represent the founding tradition of Atlantic salmon fly fishing. The Spey gave its name to the casting style used everywhere for steelhead and salmon. The Tweed's autumn runs are legendary. The Dee's spring fish are among the earliest Atlantic salmon anywhere. The tradition of fishing with ghillies (local guides) on privately owned beats has been preserved largely unchanged for generations, creating a cultural experience alongside the extraordinary fishing.
The River Tweed produces more Atlantic salmon than any other river in Scotland — and the autumn run from September through November is when the largest fresh fish pack the famous pools in numbers that would seem impossible to anyone who has only fished pressured North American rivers.

Scotland's salmon rivers — the Spey, Tay, Tweed, Dee, and many others — represent some of the world's oldest and most tradition-rich fly fishing. Atlantic salmon run Scottish rivers from February through October, with spring and summer fish providing the best conditions. Two-handed (Spey) casting was developed specifically for these rivers.

Technique
Scottish salmon fishing is conducted with traditional Spey casting on two-handed rods. Swing classic hair-wing or tube fly patterns through the runs and pools. River beats are leased by the week or day. A ghillie (guide) is customary and invaluable for reading the river. The River Spey's lower beats near Craigellachie are particularly famous.
Seasonal Notes
Atlantic salmon run Scottish rivers from the North Atlantic. Spring fish (February–May) are often the largest and most prized. Grilse (smaller single-sea-winter fish) are most numerous in summer. Hitched tube flies fished in the surface film (a 'greased line' technique) can provoke salmon to take on the surface — the most exciting of all Atlantic salmon takes.
Access & Approach
Multiple access points throughout the Highlands. Scottish salmon licence required plus beat permits — managed through regional fishing associations and agents. Ghillie guidance is customary and expected. Alba Game Fishing and similar specialist agencies handle booking for visiting anglers.
