About this Water

The Spanish Pyrenees offer one of Europe's most underrated fly fishing experiences — a vast network of 60+ rivers across 14 major mountain valleys in Aragon and Navarra provinces, holding wild brown trout and the remarkable barbel (Barbus species) in fast, clear mountain water. The barbel of the Pyrenean rivers are often described as 'freshwater bonefish' — sight-fishing to cruising barbel in clear water with floating bread flies or dry caddis requires the same stealth and precision as saltwater flats fishing. Aren Lodge and Santa Cila Lodge provide guided access to the finest water.

Pyrenean barbel grow to over 10 lbs and readily take surface flies when feeding — a species almost unknown to North American fly fishers that provides technical sight-fishing comparable to bonefish in a mountain stream setting.

April Outlook

April opens the Pyrenean fishing season with cold, clear mountain water and the first significant BWO and caddis hatches. Wild brown trout are hungry after winter. The Aragon and Navarra provinces hold over 60 rivers with virtually no fishing pressure by international standards. Aren Lodge in the eastern Pyrenees and Santa Cila Lodge in the west are the primary operations.

Productive Patterns

  • BWO Parachute (#16-18)
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph
  • Soft Hackle Wet Fly

Tips

Spanish fishing licence (Generalitat or regional authority) required — available online. The Pyrenean rivers are underfished and fish are not highly selective by European standards. Dry fly fishing works most of the season.

Water Notes

Water 44-54°F. Spring snowmelt from the high Pyrenees. Clear and cold. The mountain streams are at their most dramatic in April.

May Outlook

May is prime time in the Spanish Pyrenees. Caddis hatches are prolific, brown trout are in peak condition, and the high mountain meadows are flowering. The Noguera Ribagorçana, Aragón Subordán, and Veral rivers are all excellent. Barbel — sometimes called the 'freshwater bonefish' of the Pyrenees — are also catchable on dry flies.

Productive Patterns

  • Elk Hair Caddis (#14-16)
  • CDC Caddis
  • Parachute Adams
  • Barbel Caddis (large)

Tips

May caddis hatches on the Pyrenean rivers are prolific by any standard. The combination of technical dry fly fishing and the extraordinary mountain scenery makes this a uniquely rewarding destination. Barbel on surface flies require careful approach.

Water Notes

Water 50-60°F. Ideal spring conditions. Caddis hatches evening through night. The finest month for surface fishing.

June Outlook

June delivers peak summer conditions in the Pyrenees. Stone fly season on the higher gradient rivers. Evening caddis and mayfly hatches. The mountain villages and traditional Aragonese cuisine add to the cultural richness of the experience.

Productive Patterns

  • Stimulator (stonefly)
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Parachute Adams
  • Hopper (late June)

Tips

June is excellent throughout. The higher Pyrenean rivers are still cold and fast with good flows. The cultural experience — traditional villages, excellent Spanish food and wine — makes this a destination beyond the fishing alone.

Water Notes

Water 54-64°F. Early summer. Mountain rivers running well. Long Spanish summer days allow evening fishing until after 9pm.
