About this Water
- Coastal Flats
- Best months: Year-round; peak Oct–May
The Turks and Caicos Islands hold some of the Caribbean's most productive bonefish flats — particularly on Providenciales, North Caicos, and Middle Caicos. The flats are vast, the water clear, and the bonefish populations strong. Permit are present but more difficult than at Andros or Abaco. The fishery is complementary to the Bahamas — similar bonefish character with less pressure and excellent year-round weather. Lodges operate from Providenciales with day-trip access to outlying flats.
The Turks and Caicos flats system is the second-largest bonefish flats system in the Atlantic basin after the Bahamas — vast white sand bottoms supporting bonefish populations that have only been seriously fished for fly in the past 30 years.
January Outlook
January delivers excellent bonefishing on the Turks & Caicos flats. Cooler water concentrates fish and makes them aggressive. The Caicos Bank flats are among the most pristine in the Caribbean.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha (bonefish)
- Crazy Charlie (tan)
- EP Spawning Shrimp
- Bead-head Clouser
Tips
North Caicos and Middle Caicos flats are the best areas. Schools of 10-30 bonefish feeding actively. Cold-water fish are more aggressive than summer fish.
Water Notes
Water 72-76°F. Trade winds can make exposed flats difficult. Interior mangrove flats are protected.
February Outlook
February offers prime bonefishing with strong northeast winds challenging some flats but creating excellent conditions on the lee sides. Large bone to 12+ lbs are regularly caught in T&C.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie
- Spawning Shrimp
- Merkin Crab (small)
Tips
Position to fish the calm sides of flats. T&C bonefish are world-class for size — 10-pound fish are expected, not exceptional. Use 8-lb tippet minimum.
Water Notes
Water 74-78°F. Trade winds steady NE. Plan to fish leeward flats.
March Outlook
March is excellent with light trades and outstanding bonefish action. Permit appear on the sand bores. The flats are clear and fish are very visible. One of the finest months for the T&C fishery.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie
- Merkin Crab
- EP Bonefish Fly
Tips
Permit are less common than the Yucatan or Keys but present. Focus on bonefish schools in the interior flats of North and Middle Caicos.
Water Notes
Water 76-80°F. Light trades. Excellent clarity. Best conditions of the winter season.
April Outlook
April is peak season in Turks & Caicos. Bonefish are in large schools, permit appear regularly on sand flats, and tarpon are in some of the deeper bights. The full flats species are available.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha (bone)
- Merkin Crab (permit)
- Tarpon Toad
- Spawning Shrimp
Tips
Peak season with lodges at capacity. Grand slam possible but permit are not as reliable as the Yucatan. Large bonefish schools in the Caicos Bight.
Water Notes
Water 78-82°F. Ideal conditions. Light trades and excellent visibility.
May Outlook
May remains excellent before summer heat arrives. Bonefish are active and large permit are findable. Some of the finest uncrowded bonefishing in the Caribbean as visitors thin out.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie
- Merkin Crab
- Spawning Shrimp
Tips
May is the shoulder season with fewer anglers. Conditions remain excellent through mid-May. Heat increases toward month's end.
Water Notes
Water 80-84°F. Increasing heat. Morning fishing is most productive.
June Outlook
June begins the low season at Turks & Caicos. The summer heat arrives and the Caicos Bank flats are warm. Bonefish remain year-round and are catchable but the heat limits comfortable fishing hours. Early morning fishing is excellent before the sun and wind build. Hurricane season begins.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha (small)
- Crazy Charlie
- EP Spawning Shrimp (small)
- Crab Fly (permit)
Tips
June on the T&C flats is best before 10am. The clear, shallow Caicos Bank warms quickly in summer sun. Fish the incoming tide from first light on the interior marls. Bonefish are resident year-round and the morning sessions remain excellent. Lodge rates are discounted significantly in summer.
Water Notes
Water 82-86°F. Summer heat. Morning fishing only for comfort. Hurricane season — monitor forecasts. Bonefish year-round on the flats.
July Outlook
July is the heart of summer low season on the Caicos Bank. Most fishing lodges reduce operations or close for renovations. Independent access via kayak or DIY wading is possible on the North and Middle Caicos flats. Bonefish are year-round residents. Early morning wading for bones is rewarding for those who handle heat well.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha (small, #6)
- Crazy Charlie (tan)
- EP Spawning Shrimp
- Crab Fly (small permit)
Tips
DIY bonefishing on the T&C flats is possible year-round and July sees very low pressure. The flats around the Leeward Channel on North Caicos are wade-accessible. Fish by 6am — by 9am the heat requires shade. Lodge availability is limited in summer.
Water Notes
Water 84-88°F. Peak summer. Morning-only fishing. Hurricane season. Low-season rates if lodges are open.
August Outlook
August continues the summer low season. The flats are warm and fishing is best in the early morning. Hurricane season is at its peak risk. Most serious flats fishers skip August at T&C, but the adventurous DIY angler can have the flats entirely to themselves.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie (small)
- EP Shrimp
- Bead-head Clouser
Tips
August is the lowest-season month at T&C. Hurricane risk is real. If you fish, stick to the protected interior flats of the Caicos Bank and have a flexible trip plan. The upside: zero fishing pressure on resident bonefish.
Water Notes
Water 86-88°F. Hurricane season peak. Very low visitor numbers. Morning-only fishing. Best to skip unless flexible on dates.
September Outlook
September begins the transition back toward the prime season. Hurricane risk moderates through the month. Bonefish on the flats remain year-round. The first hints of fall improve fishing conditions toward month's end. Lodge operations begin resuming in late September.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie
- EP Spawning Shrimp
- Crab Fly
Tips
Late September at T&C sees conditions improving significantly. The heat moderates, trade winds return, and the bonefish fishing picks up pace. Monitor the hurricane forecast but late-month trips can be excellent with shoulder-season pricing.
Water Notes
Water 84-86°F and slowly cooling. Hurricane risk tapering. Conditions improving through the month. Lodges reopening.
October Outlook
October marks the return of prime conditions to Turks & Caicos. Hurricane risk has passed, trade winds return, and the bonefish season resumes in earnest. Permit begin reappearing on the sand bores. A transitional month building toward the November-April peak.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha (bonefish)
- Merkin Crab (returning permit)
- Crazy Charlie
- EP Spawning Shrimp
Tips
October is the opening of the fall fishing season at T&C. Bonefish are increasingly active as water temps fall from summer highs. Permit start returning to the sand flats. Lodge availability is generally good in October — a shoulder season sweet spot.
Water Notes
Water 80-84°F and cooling. Hurricane season ending. Trade winds building. Excellent fishing through October.
November Outlook
November brings excellent bonefishing back as the summer heat subsides. Large bonefish are at their most accessible. Conditions are similar to spring fishing with comfortable all-day temperatures.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie
- EP Spawning Shrimp
- Bead-head Clouser
Tips
November bonefishing in T&C is underrated. Fewer visitors than spring, lower lodge rates, and fishing comparable to March/April. Highly recommended.
Water Notes
Water 78-82°F. Northeast trades beginning. Excellent fishing through November.
December Outlook
December offers excellent bonefishing with the larger bonefish of winter beginning to appear. The T&C flats are quiet and fishing is very good for those willing to fish in the cooler months.
Productive Patterns
- Gotcha
- Crazy Charlie (small)
- EP Shrimp
- Spawning Shrimp
Tips
Holiday week fishing in T&C is a well-kept secret. Quality guides and lodges available. Large bonefish schools on the Caicos Bank.
Water Notes
Water 74-78°F. Northeast trades building. Fish the protected Caicos Bank on windy days.
