About this Water
- Lake
- Best months: Nov–Feb (austral summer), peak Dec–Jan
Jurassic Lake — officially Lago Strobel — sits on a remote high-altitude plateau in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, accessible only by helicopter from El Calafate. It holds wild rainbow trout that are among the largest on earth: fish averaging 8-12 lbs are routine, with trophy specimens exceeding 25 lbs encountered each season. The steppe plateau setting is stark and windswept, adding to the primordial atmosphere that earned the lake its nickname. With extremely limited rod pressure and a massive food base of freshwater crustaceans, these fish grow to sizes impossible elsewhere.
The average catch weight at Jurassic Lake exceeds 8 lbs — a number that would represent an exceptional trophy trout at virtually any other fishery in the world, yet here it is simply the average fish.

Lago Strobel (Jurassic Lake) in Patagonia is perhaps the world's most extraordinary rainbow trout fishery. An isolated volcanic lake in the Santa Cruz steppe, it holds rainbow trout averaging 10+ lbs, with fish of 20–25 lbs common. The fish are aggressive and numerous — anglers may see hundreds of rises in a morning.

- Muddler Minnow #2–6
- Woolly Bugger Black #4
- Clouser Minnow #2–6
- Streamer #2–6
Technique
Jurassic Lake is accessed exclusively through a handful of permitted lodges. Early morning beach fishing when trout are stacked in the shallows is the signature experience. Large streamers and muddlers fished along the shore can produce dozens of strikes. Wind is constant — casting ability matters.
Seasonal Notes
Jurassic Lake's rainbow trout are resident lake fish that gather along the shoreline and river mouths to feed. The Barrancoso River draining the lake hosts large numbers of staging fish. Large streamer or nymph patterns in the river mouths and shallow lake edges. Surface activity can be excellent during calmer conditions — large dry flies occasionally produce.
Access & Approach
El Calafate (FTE) airport, then helicopter transfer to Jurassic Lake Lodge (sole operation). All-inclusive lodge packages only. Argentine fishing licence required. 6-7 weight rods for the lake's trophy fish. Wind is constant — practice casting in wind before arrival.
