About this Water
- Freestone
- Best months: Dec–Apr (austral summer), peak Jan–Feb
The Río Grande on Tierra del Fuego is the ultimate destination for sea-run brown trout — fish of staggering size entering the river from the cold, nutrient-rich Beagle Channel. Trophy sea trout averaging 10–15 lbs with fish to 30 lbs possible make this the most famous large sea trout fishery in the world. The Patagonian steppe setting — windswept, vast, and utterly remote — adds to the mythic status of this fishery.
Río Grande sea trout are so large and powerful that the 7-weight trout rod you'd fish elsewhere in Patagonia is inadequate — most guides recommend 9 and 10-weight rods for fish that can strip hundreds of meters of backing.

The Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego is legendary for its large sea-run brown trout — 'sea trout' (marrón costero) that average 8–12 lbs with trophy fish exceeding 25 lbs. The stark Patagonian landscape, wild fish, and tradition of European-style fly fishing make this one of the world's most coveted fishing destinations.
Productive Patterns
- Green Butt #4–8
- Temple Dog #4–8
- Woolly Bugger Olive #4–8
- Clouser Minnow #4–8
- Muddler #4–8
Technique
Estancia-based fishing is the norm — private access to river beats with guides and accommodation. Swing large flies through the famous pools. Strong Fuegian winds (often 40+ mph) require casting skills developed specifically for this environment. Catch-and-release is practiced at quality lodges.
Seasonal Notes
Sea-run brown trout enter the Rio Grande from the South Atlantic in November–December to spawn. The fish are bright silver and incredibly powerful. Not the primary approach on the Rio Grande.
January Outlook
January is prime time on the Rio Grande. Sea-trout are in full run — chrome bright fish from 8-30 lbs are aggressive and fresh. The estancias are at full capacity and the fishing is extraordinary. Wind is a constant — 15-40 mph daily.
Productive Patterns
- Matukas (various)
- Rabbit Strip Streamer
- Muddler (heavy)
- Sculpin Fly
Tips
Wind management is everything at TDF. Roll casts and spey presentations help in the incessant wind. Fish are in the lies even in extreme wind — they're used to it. Use 200-grain sink-tip lines.
Water Notes
Water 44-52°F. Cold Patagonian summer. Runoff from the Andes can muddy the river after rain. Short fishing windows between conditions.
February Outlook
February continues excellent sea-run brown trout fishing. Later in the season fish are darker but still aggressive. The largest fish of the season often appear in February. Season typically ends late February or early March.
Productive Patterns
- Matuka (dark)
- Rabbit Strip (dark olive)
- Muddler
- Late-Run Sculpin
Tips
February fish are seasoned and slightly less aggressive than December fish, but size is superior. Some incredible late-season trophy fish. The Patagonian landscape in late summer is breathtaking.
Water Notes
Water 48-54°F. Autumn approaching. Late season rain can increase flows beneficially.
December Outlook
December opens the Tierra del Fuego season. The Rio Grande's sea-run brown trout — the largest in the world — begin their run from the Beagle Channel. Chrome-bright 15-25 lb fish are the prize. The season is short and extraordinary.
Productive Patterns
- Matukas (large)
- Zonker (rabbit strip)
- Muddler Minnow (large)
- Magnum Sculpin
Tips
Large heavy flies on 8-10 weight rods. These fish are incredibly strong. The Rio Grande runs through private estancias — all access is through lodge bookings. Bring warm layers for Patagonian conditions.
Water Notes
Water 42-50°F. The Beagle Channel drainage keeps water cold and nutrient-rich. Fish enter with tides and rain events.
Access & Approach
Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina. Argentine fishing licence required plus provincial stamp. The best water is on private estancias requiring a lodge booking — Estancia Despedida, Kaikén, and Villa María are well-known operations. February is typically the peak month for numbers and size.
