Weekly AI Outlook as of 06/05/26
At 1020 cfs, the Middle Fork is running high and cold for early June — perfect for the peak salmonfly emergence window. Water temps in the mid-40s with cooling weather ahead will keep the big bugs active through midday. Focus on foam patterns and rubber legs in the deeper runs and along undercut banks. The cooling trend actually helps extend daily emergence windows, though expect some weather on Saturday-Sunday.
- Flow: 1020 cfs — high but fishable for wilderness float. Cold snowmelt keeping water temps in mid-40s, perfect for extended stonefly activity.
- Hatches: Peak salmonfly emergence window with golden stones starting. Focus Sofa Pillow #6, orange Stimulators, rubber legs in deeper pockets.
- Water Temp: Mid-40s — ideal for stonefly activity. Cooling weather will maintain temps, keeping bugs active longer through the day.
- Best Window: Mid-morning through early afternoon as air temps climb. Stoneflies most active 10am-3pm in current conditions.

About this Water
- Freestone
- Best months: June–Sept (float season); July–Aug peak for cutthroat
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River offers one of the greatest wilderness adventures in North America — a 100-mile float through the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness, the largest roadless area in the lower 48 states. Wild westslope cutthroat trout rise to dry flies throughout the canyon. Hot springs emerge from the granite walls directly beside camp. Bighorn sheep watch from the cliffs above. Steelhead are present in the lower reaches in season. This is fly fishing as exploration of the American West.
The Middle Fork canyon contains over 100 named hot springs accessible directly from the river corridor — evening soaks in natural hot pools are as much a part of the Middle Fork experience as the exceptional wild cutthroat fishing.
