Silver Creek is running 102 cfs with water at 59.7°F — perfect spring creek conditions with the famous brown drake hatch still firing. Lost River Outfitters confirms drakes are going strong for the next few days, plus midday PMD and callibaetis emergence. With water this clear and fish this spooky, approach slowly and use fluorocarbon tippet. The Kilpatrick Bridge section remains your best bet for consistent action.

About this Water

Silver Creek is a legendary spring creek near Sun Valley — glassy, cold, and demanding. The Sun Valley Company section managed by The Nature Conservancy is among the finest spring creek fisheries in the country, with enormous rainbow and brown trout visibly feeding on tiny insects in ultraclear water. It's a rite of passage for serious dry fly anglers.

Ernest Hemingway fished Silver Creek regularly and praised it as among the finest trout streams he'd encountered anywhere in the world.

January Outlook

Silver Creek's Nature Conservancy section is closed through April 30. The lower Silver Creek and the Point section are also quiet. Some winter midging is possible in the open sections but Silver Creek is primarily a May–October fishery.

Productive Patterns

  • Not applicable — Nature Conservancy section closed

Tips

The Nature Conservancy section opens May 1. Some private water on Silver Creek may be fishable with landowner permission through winter. January is for planning the spring season.

Water Notes

Spring creek closed except private water. Water 42–48°F year-round but managed for spring-fall access.

February Outlook

Still closed on the main sections. Silver Creek's world-class spring fishing begins May 1. February is for fly selection, leader preparation, and booking accommodations in the Hailey/Sun Valley area.

Productive Patterns

  • Not applicable — closed

Tips

Book your Silver Creek trip for late May–June when PMDs are consistent. The spring creek's year-round cold water supports excellent hatches the moment it opens.

Water Notes

Closed through April 30. Spring creek water 42–48°F year-round.

March Outlook

Closed through April 30. Silver Creek's spring fishing approaches as the Hailey area emerges from winter. Idaho's high desert spring begins in March with sage blooming and waterfowl returning to the Nature Conservancy wetlands.

Productive Patterns

  • Not applicable — closed

Tips

The Nature Conservancy section opens May 1. Plan your first visit in late May when PMDs are reliable. Register in advance with the Nature Conservancy visitor center.

Water Notes

Closed. Water 44–50°F in early spring.

April Outlook

The final month of the closure period at Silver Creek. Opens May 1. Anticipation builds as the first angler reports of pre-season PMD activity emerge from the spring seeps and private sections.

Productive Patterns

  • Closed — opens May 1

Tips

April 30 is the last day before the main season opens. Some private sections may fish with permission. The spring creek conditions in late April are prime for the opening week.

Water Notes

Opening May 1. Water 46–52°F. Spring conditions building.

May Outlook

Silver Creek's spring fishing focuses on PMDs and Baetis in the spring section. The Nature Conservancy section opens May 1.

Productive Patterns

  • PMD Sparkle Dun
  • Baetis Dun
  • CDC Emerger
  • RS2

Tips

Silver Creek is the most technically demanding spring creek in the Rocky Mountain West. Fish are highly educated. 6X minimum, 7X preferred. Long leaders and careful wading.

Water Notes

Stable spring creek flows year-round. Cold 48–56°F. Crystal clear. No variation from runoff — the ultimate consistent fishery.

June Outlook

PMDs and Caddis produce consistent action on Silver Creek's flat water. Exceptional dry fly fishing for large rainbows and browns.

Productive Patterns

  • PMD Cripple
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Extended Body PMD
  • Comparadun

Tips

The Kilpatrick Bridge section is the most accessible and productive. Fish in the late afternoon when hatches are most reliable. Arrive early to scout rising fish.

Water Notes

Stable flows 40–80 cfs. Water 52–60°F. Spring creek clarity — fish can see everything. Fluorocarbon tippet strongly recommended.

July Outlook

Silver Creek in July is challenging but rewarding. PMDs, Callibaetis, and Trico spinner falls produce surface-feeding fish from first light.

Productive Patterns

  • Trico Spinner
  • Callibaetis
  • PMD Cripple
  • Parachute Adams

Tips

Trico spinner falls at dawn can produce the best fishing of the day on Silver Creek. Set up in position before the fall begins — it often lasts only an hour but is extraordinary.

Water Notes

Stable flows. Water 56–63°F. Very warm-tolerant compared to freestone rivers. Fish all day.

August Outlook

Trico spinner falls and Callibaetis are the highlights. Large trout feed consistently on the flat, clear water. Some of the most challenging and rewarding fishing in Idaho.

Productive Patterns

  • Trico Spinner #22
  • Callibaetis
  • Ant #18
  • Beetle

Tips

Terrestrials become increasingly important in August on Silver Creek. Ant and Beetle patterns produce fish that aren't interested in the hatch. A beetle dropped against the bank edge can produce exceptional fish.

Water Notes

Stable flows. Water 58–65°F. Excellent conditions year-round on this spring creek.

September Outlook

Excellent September fishing with fall Baetis and continued Callibaetis. The Nature Conservancy section closes October 31.

Productive Patterns

  • Blue Winged Olive
  • Callibaetis
  • PMD Cripple
  • RS2

Tips

September BWO hatches are reliable on overcast afternoons. Size 20–22 patterns. The Conservancy section is beautiful in the fall with less pressure than summer.

Water Notes

Stable flows. Water cooling to 52–60°F. Excellent clarity. One of the finest September spring creeks anywhere.

October Outlook

Final month on the Nature Conservancy section before it closes October 31. Fall BWO fishing is excellent and large fish are feeding aggressively.

Productive Patterns

  • Blue Winged Olive
  • Mahogany Dun
  • RS2
  • Soft Hackle

Tips

The October closure date concentrates angler pressure. Fish early in the month for the best experience. The fall BWO hatch can produce incredible dry fly fishing on the right day.

Water Notes

Stable cold flows. Water 48–56°F. Closes October 31 on the Nature Conservancy section.

November Outlook

Silver Creek's Nature Conservancy section closes October 31. November sees a quiet transition on the spring creek. The open private sections may fish on mild days for those with access.

Productive Patterns

  • Zebra Midge
  • RS2
  • BWO Nymph

Tips

The main public access closes October 31. Some fall midge activity continues on open sections through November. A good time to reflect on the season.

Water Notes

Main section closed October 31. Water 44–50°F. Off season.

December Outlook
