About this Water
- Freestone
- Best months: Apr–Oct, peak May (caddis) & June–Aug
The Arkansas River through the Salida–Buena Vista corridor is one of Colorado's premier freestone trout fisheries — a high-altitude river running through the upper Arkansas Valley between two major mountain ranges. Brown trout dominate, with rainbows and the occasional cutbow mixed in. The river fishes well from late spring through fall, with the famous Mother's Day caddis hatch in May, golden stoneflies in June, and reliable pmd and yellow sally action through summer. The Browns Canyon section combines class III–IV whitewater with productive pocket water, while the milder reaches above Salida offer accessible wade fishing along Highway 285.
The Arkansas hosts the Mother's Day caddis hatch — one of the most prolific caddis emergences in the West, with billions of grannom caddis lifting off the river through early May.
May Outlook
The Arkansas near Salida and Buena Vista transitions from runoff in late May. Caddis and PMDs emerge as the river drops.
Productive Patterns
- Elk Hair Caddis
- PMD
- Stimulator
- Hare's Ear
Tips
The Salida section typically clears ahead of the upper river. The Quality Waters section above Salida is the most productive for dry fly fishing. Check the gauge daily in May.
Water Notes
Drops from peak 3,000+ cfs to fishable 800–2,000 cfs in late May. Clear with a green tint when fishing well.
June Outlook
Prime time on the Arkansas. Caddis, PMDs, and Golden Stoneflies produce excellent dry fly fishing on one of Colorado's most popular rivers.
Productive Patterns
- Elk Hair Caddis
- Golden Stone
- PMD Sparkle Dun
- Stimulator #10
Tips
The Arkansas sees heavy traffic in summer — fish the morning sessions or weekdays for the best experience. Float the Quality Waters section for the most productive access.
Water Notes
800–2,500 cfs. Water 52–60°F. Classic freestone river at peak conditions.
July Outlook
Hopper-dropper and caddis season. The Arkansas's Rocky Mountain scenery makes it one of Colorado's most scenic fishing destinations.
Productive Patterns
- Hopper-Dropper
- Elk Hair Caddis
- PMD Cripple
- Chubby Chernobyl
Tips
The section from Salida to Cañon City produces excellent hopper fishing. The river is heavily pressured — fish early morning or access the more remote canyon sections.
Water Notes
600–1,500 cfs. Water 60–67°F. Prime summer conditions.
August Outlook
Hopper fishing continues with excellent morning caddis and afternoon terrestrial sessions.
Productive Patterns
- Dave's Hopper
- Elk Hair Caddis
- Parachute Ant
- PMD
Tips
The Arkansas can warm in August — stick to morning sessions or target shaded canyon sections. The stretch from Cotopaxi to Texas Creek runs in a cooler canyon.
Water Notes
400–1,000 cfs. Water can exceed 68°F in open sections midday. Fish early or find the canyon water.
September Outlook
Fall BWO and streamer fishing. The Arkansas's brown trout population shows strongly in September.
Productive Patterns
- Blue Winged Olive
- Mahogany Dun
- Streamer
- Copper John
Tips
September on the Arkansas is excellent with less pressure than summer. The BWO hatch produces consistent action on overcast afternoons.
Water Notes
300–800 cfs. Water 52–60°F. Good fall conditions throughout the river system.
