About this Water
- Freestone
- Best months: May–Oct, peak June–Aug
The Rio Grande in southern Colorado runs from the headwaters in the San Juan Mountains down through the high San Luis Valley. The upper river above South Fork is a classic high-elevation freestone — wild brown and rainbow trout in pocket water and gravel runs. The middle and lower river through the San Luis Valley becomes a broader meadow fishery. The river fishes well from late spring through fall, with reliable caddis and PMD hatches. The South Fork below Beaver Creek Reservoir is a productive add-on.
The Rio Grande's headwaters in the Weminuche Wilderness include some of the highest-elevation wild trout water in the lower 48 — small streams above 11,000 feet supporting native Rio Grande cutthroat.
May Outlook
The Rio Grande in the San Luis Valley as runoff builds. Target the early May window or late May as flows drop.
Productive Patterns
- Elk Hair Caddis
- PMD
- Stimulator
- Hare's Ear
Tips
The Box Canyon section near Creede is exceptional. The high altitude meadow sections fish when flows are manageable. Early May before snowmelt is ideal.
Water Notes
Flows variable 300–3,000 cfs. Target early May or late May. The Box Canyon above Creede holds the best fish.
June Outlook
Prime season on the Rio Grande. Stoneflies, PMDs, and Caddis produce excellent dry fly fishing in the spectacular Box Canyon.
Productive Patterns
- Golden Stone
- PMD
- Elk Hair Caddis
- Stimulator #8
Tips
The Box Canyon requires a permit to float and is spectacular. The wade sections near Creede are accessible without permits. A guide is valuable for a first visit.
Water Notes
600–2,000 cfs in June. Cold 50–58°F. Box Canyon is remote and requires planning.
July Outlook
Hopper-dropper and caddis fishing on the Rio Grande's open meadow sections. The high altitude keeps the river cool.
Productive Patterns
- Hopper-Dropper
- Elk Hair Caddis
- PMD
- Chubby Chernobyl
Tips
The meadow sections between Creede and Del Norte fish well with hoppers in July. The altitude (7,000+ feet) keeps water temperatures comfortable.
Water Notes
400–1,000 cfs. Water 56–64°F. High altitude keeps it cool. Good summer conditions.
September Outlook
Excellent fall fishing on the Rio Grande. The big brown trout in the Box Canyon become aggressive before spawning.
Productive Patterns
- Blue Winged Olive
- Mahogany Dun
- Streamer
- Hopper
Tips
September in the Box Canyon is one of the finest late-season experiences in Colorado. Very little pressure on world-class water.
Water Notes
300–700 cfs. Water 50–58°F. Excellent fall conditions in dramatic canyon scenery.
