Weekly AI Outlook as of 06/05/26

At 696 cfs and 50.5°F, the Gunnison is running lower and colder than typical June levels, creating prime technical fishing conditions. Water temps are right at the PMD emergence threshold — with afternoon highs pushing near 80°F, expect midday hatches around 11am-2pm when air temperatures trigger the bugs. No recent shop intel — outlook based on current conditions. The lower flows mean cleaner presentations and spookier fish, but also better access to normally difficult lies.

Generated weekly from live USGS gauge readings, weather forecasts, and recent fly shop reports. Updates Friday mornings.

About this Water

The Gunnison River through Black Canyon and the Gunnison Gorge is one of the most dramatic trout fisheries in North America — a deep, narrow canyon cut through dark Precambrian rock, with pocket water, plunge pools, and big trout that rarely see anglers. The Gold Medal water section produces large rainbows and browns. The Gunnison Gorge below Black Canyon National Park requires a hike-in or raft-in approach; the river above through the Almont stretch is more accessible. Stonefly hatches in early summer are exceptional.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison's walls reach 2,700 feet — the deepest narrow canyon in North America — making the trout water below among the most spectacular settings in fly fishing.

May Outlook

The Gunnison Gorge is one of Colorado's most dramatic fisheries — accessible only by foot or raft. As runoff clears, exceptional dry fly fishing emerges.

Productive Patterns

  • PMD Sparkle Dun
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Stimulator
  • Nymph

Tips

Floating the Gunnison Gorge is a multi-day wilderness experience. The walk-in sections via the Chukar, Duncan, and Ute trails require a 1.5-mile descent. Plan accordingly. The reward is solitude and world-class fishing.

Water Notes

High flows in early May dropping to 800–2,000 cfs by late May. The walk-in sections clear ahead of the floatable gorge.

June Outlook

Prime season in the Gunnison Gorge. Golden Stones, PMDs, Caddis, and Salmonflies create overlapping hatches on one of Colorado's most remote rivers.

Productive Patterns

  • Salmonfly
  • Golden Stone
  • PMD
  • Elk Hair Caddis

Tips

The gorge is remote and spectacular. Float trips require a shuttle and take 2–3 days. The walk-in sections are excellent for day trips. Fish are large — 18+ inch brown trout are common.

Water Notes

1,000–3,000 cfs in June. Cold 52–60°F. The Gunnison's Black Canyon creates a protected microclimate.

July Outlook

Excellent fishing throughout the Gunnison system. Hopper-dropper in the gorge and Taylor River sections.

Productive Patterns

  • Hopper-Dropper
  • PMD Cripple
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Golden Stone

Tips

The Gunnison in July is exceptional but the gorge is remote — plan accordingly with proper gear and permits. The walk-in sections are accessible for day trips.

Water Notes

600–1,500 cfs. Water 56–64°F. Outstanding summer wilderness fishing.

August Outlook

Hopper season in the gorge. The Gunnison's large browns aggressively take hoppers in the heat of August.

Productive Patterns

  • Dave's Hopper
  • Chubby Chernobyl
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • PMD Cripple

Tips

The canyon shade keeps water temps comfortable even in August. Large brown trout in the gorge are aggressive hopper eaters. A memorable wilderness fishing experience.

Water Notes

500–1,000 cfs. Water 58–65°F — the canyon shade helps maintain comfortable temps.

September Outlook

Outstanding fall fishing in the Gunnison Gorge. Less pressure after summer and exceptional BWO and streamer activity.

Productive Patterns

  • Blue Winged Olive
  • Mahogany Dun
  • Streamer
  • Copper John

Tips

September in the Gunnison Gorge is spectacular. The large brown trout are at their most aggressive before spawning. Float trips in September are a highlight of Colorado fly fishing.

Water Notes

400–900 cfs. Water 52–60°F. Excellent fall wilderness conditions.
